The Meeting
John Leake will continue the discussion and demonstration on building a Silver Chest. This will be part two of a 3 part series that will cover box construction, leg and rail, drawers, silverware liners and hardware, as well as many other tips and techniques used in furniture making. Come join us as we dissect and demonstrate how to build this beautiful piece of furniture that can house all your precious silver.
Note From Our Club President
For those of you who did not attend the January meeting, you missed a couple of important announcements. First, the club now has access to a shop. As most of you know, Jerry Corbett passed away last summer. His widow, Judy, has graciously offered us the use of Jerry's shop. Some of the equipment has been sold but what remains is adequate to accommodate many projects. Our meetings will continue to be held at Leake's Antiques during the winter months as the heat generated from burning high quality wood is much more comfortable than from other sources, and at Jimmy Matthew's shop where the HVAC system has the capacity to reduce the heat in Hades to polar levels. The intended use of the Corbett shop is to provide a venue for group projects and hands-on instructional activities. We will discuss this further at our next meeting, at which time I will also ask for a few volunteers to help straighten up the shop.
By the way, Judy still has a large metal storage box on wheels that she would like to see gone. The inside measures 24"deep, 32"wide and 60” long and would make a great little kiln. If you have any interest contact her at 704-451-2853 to work out the details.
Next, our emphasis for this year will be to increase membership. To that end we will attempt to broaden our public exposure through expanded use of the internet and by participation in local woodworking and craft shows and anything else we can think of. I am told that there will be a Charlotte Woodworking show this year however the date has apparently not yet been announced. Also, the program format for this year has been somewhat altered. During the course of the year John will make two 3 part presentations taking the construction of a project from beginning through completion. Each of these sessions will be recorded on CD and, for a nominal fee, will be made available to the membership. Nominal means average doesn't it? Maybe that's the wrong word, they'll be cheap.
Finally, in order to help accomplish all of this, Jay Matthews has agreed to join the board. It is this kind of effort and enthusiasm that will be necessary to make our club a continuing success. Please keep that in mind when it comes time to ask for participants at the upcoming events.

Snacks
While the refreshment schedule has been discontinued, anyone feeling so moved to bring them please feel free to do so.
Remember your dues
They remain a bargain at $25 per year! Remember we use the honor system for the dues and we rely on the dues to support the club. They pay for monthly door prizes, some paid speakers, and subsidize the November Christmas Party. We will also have to have some money to keep our website up and going. So if you have not already paid your 2012 dues, see Phil, Jay, or Pete. Then you are all set for an entire year of more good stuff.
The club thanks you for your interest and support!
